POPPED is Back!

Save the date, Philly! This looks like a good one!

Pennsylvania Horticultural Society POP UPS!

Arcadia has a new neighbor on 20th street! PHS is unveiling its latest Pop Up place—a new garden at 20th and Market streets!

PHS has transformed a vacant lot in bustling Center City into a peaceful oasis, providing a welcome reprieve from the workday. Starting this week, the garden will be open on Wednesday and Thursday afternoons and everyone is welcome to visit.

Funding for this temporary green space comes courtesy of the William Penn Foundation, with additional assistance from the Brandywine Realty Trust and Independence Blue Cross. Six nearby restaurants are also participating by offering special dishes that use produce grown at the garden; proceeds will be donated to PHS for future greening initiatives.

The transformed landscape covers nearly 32,000 square feet and includes an herb and vegetable production area. The central goal for this downtown destination is to raise awareness for City Harvest, a PHS program that provides fresh produce for Philadelphians in need. Learn more here.  Visitors will also get to re-experience “écolibrium,” an exhibit of sustainable building and gardening originally created by Temple University Ambler for the 2011 Philadelphia International Flower Show.

The PHS Pop Up Garden will be open on Wednesdays and Thursdays from noon to 2 pm with free, on-site horticultural workshops. (Topics will include container gardening, cut flowers, organic pest control, and more.)  Fitness classes, tours, and other special events will be planned throughout the summer as well.

DearPhotograph

About the site - "take a picture of a picture from the past in the present."

Can't put it any better than that.   Here are my favorites (the captions are what makes them so great, so be sure to read them!

Dear Photograph,
Dad never took a picture of me, ever. Then I noticed his reflection in the glass.
Happy Father’s Day, Dad.

Dear Photograph,
I wish I treated you better when we were in high school.

Wine-d Out

Last night I had the pleasure of checking out Biba Wine Bar, located right over the Walnut Street bridge in University City.  Brought to us by the lovely folks at Tria, Biba was everything I had expected, and more.  The drink selection paired very well with the menu - my friend and I ordered the meat plate (a must-have if you go!), along with a 'sexy' cheese and then we shared a panini.

Don't be afraid of taking a trip to University City - Biba is definitely worth it!

Store Buyout

Check this inspirational video of members of the Fusion Arts Museum as they completlely buy every item in Hercules Fancy Grocery, which was about to go out of business, helping him to remain open.

All of the items have been repurposed into little keepsakes avaialble online at The Art of Convenience.  All proceeds from the sale of the artwork goes back to helping Hercules's conveneice store stay afloat.

Just goes to show how important it is to support local businesses!!

Judegement Day: The Philly Skyline

You know how we get stuck in the same routines, and walk the same blocks, day in and day out?  And we be come desensitized, as nothing is ever new.  Well, Portland photographer Brad Maule spent a week in Philly taking pictures of the city from a different point of view - a non-native view.  After living in Philly for the last four years, these pictures definitely showed me a different view of the city, expecially since most are areas I walk by every day.   Take a look at some of my favorite images (often just from the other side of the black!), and then check out the web page here with 180 images shot by Maule.

Also, big thanks to Philebrity for blogging about Maule and in turn, sharing it with us!
