Wood you?

It's ironic, with the world being so technologically advanced, there are so many artists that incorporate wood into their products (kind of seems like an oxymoron...).  I'm always so taken back when I see a cool accessory I imagined was only capable of being made in plastic, but in wood form.  Check out these cool and environmentally friendly electronics!

Miniot iPhone4S case, made in Holland (with racing stripes!)

AlestRukov computer mice, made with the  intention to create the best ecologically sustainable design. AlestRukov mouse body is safe for the environment in manufacture, use, and utilization

"AlestRukov computer mice are eco-friendly alternative to harmful plastic gadgets polluting our world. The idea behind the product is to get the maximum out of natural materials"

While companies were constantly working to make cheaper sound, Vers Audio worked to make better sound, and they’re making it with the most renewable products on the planet: wood and bamboo.  More info here
"This speaker is made from bamboo called the Japanese SuSu bamboo, it is a special type of bamboo which is smoked and aged for close to 100 years. The speakers utilize the resonance of bamboo. No power source needed" More info here

Pretty cool!  Any more natural electronics you know about?  Comment and tell us about them!

Alex

Philly Foodie

With the new year having just rolled in, it's time to update my list of most-loved restaurants in the city.  If you haven't been to some of these places, be sure to try them out!

City Tap House - 39th & Walnut
With 60 rotating beers on tap, you can't go wrong (I've even mixed pumpkin beers & sweet ciders as per the recommendation of the bartender, for a seriously awesome drink).  The brunch menu is divine and the brick oven pizza never fails!

500 Degrees - 15th & Sansom
From the legendary team behind Rouge on the Square, 500 degrees has my favorite burger and fries combo.  I'm obsessed with the truffle fries!

Couch Tomato Cafe - 102 Rector Street, Manayunk
I'm always talking about Couch Tomato and my favorite salad ever: The Food Pyramid.  Spinach, shredded mozzarella, cucumbers, strawberries, chicken and candied walnuts.  Heaven on a plate.  Their funky pizza are yummy as well.

A Full Plate - 1009 N Bodine St
Go here on an empty stomach and leave very, very happy.  There isn't anything on this Southern-homestyle style menu that isn't delicious!

Distrito - 40th & Chestnut
Modern Mexican at its finest.  Between the countless tequilla infused cocktails and large selection of amazing tacos, its hard to pick what my favorite dish is (but it's probably the Mahi Mahi tacos!)

20th Between Market & Chestnut
The best falafel in the city.  The end.

We'd love to know, which are your favorite restaurants in the city?  What should we try next?

Cheers,
Alex

New Year, New Resolutions: Natalie's List

Happy 2012 to all!!
I like to reflect on my habits/ life/ goals/ etc. with every change of season, but the beginning of the calendar year is an especially easy time to remember and plan for the year ahead.

With all of the indulgence of the holidays, it seems like everyone resolves to eat healthier and be more active.  Me too :)

1. Make green smoothies at least once/ week.
My current fav combo:
1 apple
juice of 1 lemon

1 cucumber
1/2 avocado
a huge bunch of kale
1/2 cup water

It's the best mix- the apple makes it sweet, the cucumber gives it freshness and the avocado makes it slightly creamy.  delish.

makes 4-5 cups
*if you're making a whole blender full, use the whole avocado.

2. Spend quality time at home (and use my fireplace!)
Warm socks, warm fire, hot coffee- couldn't be better.
Live in the moment and enjoy the simple pleasures in life.  Take time to relax.

3. Craft it up!  Make something every week.
Keep yarn out in the open to encourage more knitting, embroidery and sewing (and it looks cool if you hang it!)
Paper flowers!  Experiment with different textures, colors and some fabric scraps too!

I'll keep it to just 3 resolutions for now...
here's to realistic goals and minimal stress in 2012!

Happiness, crafts and love
