One of my favorite things about Arcadia (besides the new Oliveve bag that just arrived, I'm literally drooling) is the fact that being enviormentally aware is so important to all of us here! Arcadia prides itself on being Philadelphia's go-to eco-friendly boutique and lifestyle store. (Just in case you didn't know, 80% of the merch carried in the store is sustainable!)
A few years ago, I was fortunate enough to watch my parents take on one of the biggest creative, eco-friendly projects of their lives- building their very own LEED (Leadership in Energy and Enviornmental Design) certified home. Green homebuilding differs from traditional construction as it includes a professional team approach to planning and construction, in my parents case, a green builder, eco-architect, sustainable engineer, and a landscape architect. Green and sustainable homebuilding pays particular attention to minimizing disturbing the building site itself, and maintains the natural landscape with native, indigenous plantings. It sustains the local community by supporting the local economy with the use of local products and local labor. By buying local and utilizing local labor, they were able to support our local communities, minimize the use of fossil fuels for transportation, and honor the natural landscape. All of the materials used to build the house are responsibly harvested local lumber, stone, amd marble. And of course, overall energy efficiency which includes electric, fossil fuel, natural gas, and geothermal resources function at least 35% more efficiently than traditional systems do.
timberframe construction
geothermal radiant heating
installing the green roof
kitchen shot, local reclaimed wood and marble
