Late Summer Favorites

The end of Summer brings a lot of mixed feelings; some melancholy, especially now that the days are getting shorter, but excitement too--for Fall (my favorite season), and all the fun that comes with it. Also, this time of year is an amazing time to shop local for fresh fruit and vegetables! I can't get enough of the sweet Jersey corn and fresh peaches now available at my co-op!

I love my corn on the grill--with butter and Jane's Krazy Mixed-up Salt (if you can find it!)

Heat the grill to medium.
Pull the outer husks down the ear to the base. Strip away the silk from each ear of corn by hand. Fold husks back into place and tie the ends together with kitchen string. Place the ears of corn in a large bowl of cold water with 1 tablespoon of salt for 10 minutes.
Remove corn from water and shake off excess. Place the corn on the grill, close the cover and grill for 15 to 20 minutes, turning every 5 minutes, or until kernels are tender when pierced with a paring knife. Remove the husks and eat on the cob or remove the kernels.
Closest picture I could find to what my Grandmother's looks like--minus all the burnt bits, of course.

My favorite dessert in the WORLD is my Grandmother's Peach Cake. Basically a peach upside-down cake smothered under a cloud of egg white. It's a bit hard to remove from the pan--and it may look like a mess at first, but that meringue layer hides a multitude of sins, and the cake itself is rich and delicious! It's been adapted from this recipe from the Joy of Cooking:

Preheat oven to 425
Carefully grease an 8-inch pie pan (you can see that I used a square cake pan--perhaps part of my problem in getting the cake out of the pan!), and cover the bottom with approximately 2 cups sliced peaches.
Sprinkle the fruit with:
2/3 cup sugar
Cinnamon or nutmeg (I used a bit of both)
Grated rind and juice of 1 lemon
Dredge with:
1 tbs flour
Pour over fruit:
2 to 4 tbs melted butter
Prepare the following batter:
Sift 1 cup AP flour
Re-sift flour with 1/2 cup sugar, 1 tsp baking powder, 1/4 tsp salt
Beat and add:
2 egg yolks, 1 tbs melted butter, 1/4 milk
Beat these ingredients until blended. Cover the fruit with the batter. Bake for about 30 minutes. Turn cake out onto a platter (if you want to brown your meringue, be sure to use an oven-safe plate).
Use the whites from the two eggs you separated earlier to make a meringue, spread over cake, and briefly brown before serving.
From now until 9/1, take an additional 20% off all sale merchandise in shop!!

Enjoy it while it's all in season and shop local!

Style Watch: Mary Meyer

Mary Meyer
'

After being introduced to the Mary Meyer clothing line, I have fallen in love. Her lines are produced in Brooklyn New York, "all MMC designs are handmade in a factory near Coney Island, printed in Greenpoint, and dyed and processed in Bushwick. “It’s important to support my community,” says Meyer." Her designs are so different than any other lines that I have seen and the fabrics and design techniques used in her garments are amazing. All of her clothing is friendly to many different figures and body types. Her flow fitting dresses and tops are perfect to dress down for a casual lunch date or dress up for a day at work or a night out. You can take most of her designs from season to season and look unique and trendy all year around. These one of a kind designs are perfect for anyone who likes comfort and unique designs. Our new fit and flare dress pictured above is one of my favorites. The fabric is so soft and perfect for the end of the summer and fall and even transforms into a winter dress. I love it paired with tights and boots and a comfy jacket for the winter months and some sandals and bracelets for the summer nights. Check out her clothing online and come try on the styles at Arcadia to see for yourself and you will be sure to fall in love!

Hope to see everyone trying out our new Mary Meyer clothing and loving it as much as I do!
Have a great weekend!

Northern Liberties Community

Northern Liberties so many perks to it. Starting out here I was not really familiar with the area too well! I am adventuring around to trying different little spots here and there to get a better feel for the area! I have expanded my knowledge of Philadelphia neighborhoods and have been falling in love with Northern Liberties   everyday that I am here! Everyone is very friendly and makes you feel like part of the community. It is a nice little neighborhood, but not very mainstream fast paste city life. Stores are very laid back and friendly with a lot of funky artwork, clothes, jewelry, furniture, and antiques that you will not find just anywhere. The food is also amazing. I have yet to walk into a restaurant and not feel welcomed, or not been able to resist finishing my whole plate! I love brunch and there are some great little brunch place that have just hit the spot. Green Eggs has some delicious brunch platters, as well as North Third and Honey Sit n' Eat. I love a great salad and Cafe La Maude is just amazing. The food is always fresh and every dish is mouth watering!

I have fallen in love with the community from the little shops, the festivals that go on to bring the community closer together! It is a great place to adventure around only minutes away from the city! Make sure to tell more people about the community! Always come in and shop at Arcadia and check out our summer sale and our fall clothes! Make sure to come by Northern Liberties and venture around! You will have so much fun!

Why to keep a Journal: Memories Will Last A Lifetime

The summer is slowly winding down! It is crazy how fast it flew by. Slowly getting ready for the school year again means cleaning out my closet and organizing my life. My little sisters are headed off to their first year of college too. Together we have been going through our childhood keepsakes and reminiscing on the days back when we used play hide and go seek, endless games of knockout, and hours on end of jump rope, double dutch, rollerblading, and hopscotch up and down our street with our neighbors. Cleaning out our closets we came across what used to be our secret "diaries" that we would not let anyone read. We sat around and read them out loud to each other laughing and wishing to go back to the time of being kids, when boys had "cooties" and deciding who was going to be "it" for tag were our biggest concerns.

Reading all our secret "diaries" brought back so many memories that I did not even remember. So I decided to start journaling again. It was nice to have handwritten memories of my childhood, and I think it will be fun to have some memories of my college life to look back on eventually and laugh with my  friends.

Journaling helps improve your self-insight, writing habit, encourages a positive outlook and personal growth! The best idea of a journal is that it is a future gift for yourself! It also a great way to let stress out. Keeping a handwritten journal can help clear your mind. You do not even have to do an entry each day,  just once a week, or even just once in a while. Writing something down on paper can make the memory last for a lifetime. Look through your childhood keepsakes and see what you come across, whether it is a journal, notes, or letters that you never sent. It will warm your heart, maybe even laugh!

Try it! Keep a journal, see if you like it! I am slowly falling in love with it, taking time to myself, it brings be a sense of calmness. Make it your own, add pictures, stickers, tickets, or anything that is special to you! Let your mind explore, doodle, reminisce, plan, daydream with words and ideas. Just keep it somewhere safe and I am sure one day when you read it again it will make you laugh and bring back memories like my childhood journal did for me.

Bag Lady: Melie Bianco Edition

New arrivals from Melie Bianco have made their away to Arcadia! Since I was introduced to the brand five years ago, I have to say they are my favorite vegan "leather" bag brand. Melie Bianco bags are well-made, on trend, and super affordable! They come in multiple colors, and the "leather" wears like real leather--getting softer and more supple with age.

Stop by Arcadia and check out all the new bags arriving just in time for Fall!
